November 06, 2007 - "Wildlife, murram and bush, a family adventure" is the journal of Brian Dawtrey, a Norfolk farm manager, who gives up everything in the UK to take his family - his wife and three children - halfway across the world to Tanganyika, now Tanzania. The country that Conrad named the ‘Dark Continent’. His goal: to use his expertise to help the people of Tanganyika make a better living from the land. He relates with great passion both the joys of caring for these people and the struggle to come to terms with a totally different culture and way of thinking.
Brian’s degree and experience in agriculture enabled him to obtain a contract from the Tanganyika Government as a Land Planning Officer. We follow Brian and his family as they settle into their life in Africa and pursue his dream. But the realization of this dream is far more complicated than anticipated. How can the family convince peasant communities that their intention to help them to maximise their resources is genuine? They have to put behind them their comfortable life in England with all its modern amenities and go back to basics. Here they are confronted with very practical difficulties: charging elephants, recalcitrant hippopotami; living with the barest of essentials and making many seemingly impossible journeys through the African provinces. These challenges affect the heart of family life too. Frequently they find themselves parted from each other with no point of contact. But we are swept along by their enthusiasm for their new life and their undying love for each other.
At the heart of this book is the perfect example of love and serenity; love for the African people and love for each other, which transcends all difficulties.
Brian Dawtrey is now retired and lives in the New Forest with his wife, Jo. He is a regular contributor of articles to several magazines and has other books in the pipeline.
"Wildlife, murram and bush, a family adventure" is published by Athena Press and will shortly be available on Amazon and in Waterstones bookstores at £8.99. This book will appeal to anyone who loves the challenge of adventure. For any further information or to buy the book please, visit the web site: www.wildlifemurramandbush.com
