March 27, 2007 - A Media Fast? Yup. It’s only one step amongst several others laid out in a comprehensive diet plan for the soul which author Rabbi Yitzchak Goldman promises will lead a person to “metaphysical health.”
“Just because the mind and soul are not visible, does not mean we should ignore all the spiritual junk food and mind clutter we consume on a daily basis,” says Goldman, whose book, The Soul Diet: Ten Steps towards Metaphysical Health, (Neeman House, 2007) will be released later this month.
The Soul Diet enters as a practical remedy to the influx of media hype and consumerism, which according to Goldman is distorting serious decision-making. “We are surrounded constantly by beckoning images and ideas which promise us the world,” he notes, “and the reality is we cannot sort the truth from the hype - what is good for us and what is in actuality a narcissistic pursuit.”
The book requires hard work, which Goldman readily admits. “Real spiritual growth doesn’t come in party packets,” he remarks. Readers are asked to avoid media for two weeks, slim down their schedules for two weeks and draw up a comprehensive map of the mind called The Satellite Map which is a debit and credit system of one’s thoughts and actions each day.
Phew. Is it worth all that hard work? Ask a media personality himself. Eric Slocum, Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist at KOMO 1000 News had this to say:
“I’m on The Soul Diet. It is so much more than a simple, how-to guide. It is an exacting map that allows one a way to discover purpose, joy and fulfillment. The process is demanding and beautiful.”
Goldman presents workshops and follow-up workshops for those on the diet. “The most rewarding moments are when people tell me how they have gained some profound insight about themselves and how much it has helped them to literally revolutionize their thinking, “ he says. “They’re tired of the feel-good, easy-does-it advice and they want to do this for real. That makes all the effort required for this project worthwile.”
