October 12, 2009 - Increased competition in the local and national comic book markets should be welcomed, according to the operator of Fan Boy Media Group.
John Cooley has been a comic book enthusiast for more than 30 years, and has seen the industry change dramatically. The two giants of the business have maintained their dominance of it, but that has come with a price.
"Comic book brands come and go," says Mr. Cooley, "but there is and always has been a market for independent publishers. We have a perspective that doesn’t fit into the mainstream, where heroes and villains aren’t strictly following convention. Everyone’s heard of Superman, and because of that Superman can’t be anything other than Superman. We can tell stories about characters that are more complex. They might not be superheroes at all, but people you can identify with because they have experiences like your own."
The over all monthly sales of comics are up from last year, but sales tend to spike or fall based on popular books from the big two companies, D.C. and Marvel.
Mr. Cooley feels that a good influx of easily accessible stories from new artists and writers can help to balance out these turbulent sales trends, while helping the local economy as well. To that end he has written and produced his first title, Warrior Breed, which will be available locally and over the internet on November 11th.
"People want to be entertained. If local writers provide that entertainment, it can only help to provide more opportunities for us to get our stories out. It could lead to us making t.v. shows, short films, or large scale movies designed to meet the needs of the local and national audience."
John Cooley is the owner and operator of Fan Boy Media Group, and serves as the first author/artist to publish through this brand.
