Nearly 10 Tons of Documents Shredded at BBB Event 490 Participate in Community Awareness Initiative

The Better Business Bureau saw nearly 500 consumers at its fourth annual “Secure Your ID” event.

Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) October 24, 2009 - The Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina (www.bbb.org) held its fourth “Secure Your ID” Day event last Saturday at Ridgewood Shopping Center. Nearly 500 consumers took part in the free event. BBB provided participants with a safe way to destroy documents containing sensitive information.

“You can’t take any chances these days when it comes to protecting your identity,” said Beverly Baskin, president and CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina. “We were happy to help consumers take an important first step in this process by disposing of sensitive documents safely.”

More than 19,000 pounds of documents were shredded Saturday. People dropped off an array of documents that included check books, bank statements, school records, utility bills, credit card receipts and register receipts. Shredding services were provided by Cintas Document Management (www.cintas.com/DocumentManagement/) and ProShred Security (www.proshred.com).

BBB and participating sponsor Coastal Federal Credit Union (www.coastal24.com) distributed information to help educate consumers on ways to further protect themselves from identity theft. In addition, two event participants were randomly selected to receive a personal shredder, compliments of Black & Decker.

“We had tons of files that were up to ten years old,” said Amy and Leonard Bush of Raleigh, who were selected to receive a personal shredder. “The boxes were just taking up room in the house and we wanted to make sure to dispose of them safely since they contained social security numbers and personal information. ‘Secure Your ID’ Day came at just the right time!”

Additional information on identity protection is available at www.bbb.org.
