February 08, 2009 - This exiting new program is for fourth and fifth grade students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement as well as community service involvement. To become a candidate, a student must have an 85th percentile or above in both reading and math on the most recent standardized test as well as a 3.5 GPA for one year’s worth of grades. Then they must fill out an NEHS application describing their community service projects.
Lower School Campus Principal, JoAnn Laskin, said, “ I was very excited to have Sagemont participate in the inaugural year of NEHS. We are looking forward to recognizing these types of students.” Enrichment teacher Doris Quintero will be the NEHS adviser at the Lower School Campus. She will be in charge of supervising the selection of new members along with a faculty committee and inducting them at a special ceremony. Once the members are selected, the chapter will organize service projects and other activities. “Anytime a school can go above and beyond by providing the best it can for its students, the school demonstrates a commitment to education; and thusly it becomes a benefit to all within the school community,” says Mrs. Quintero.
Gerry Tirozzi, Executive Director of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) said, “We are proud to recognize The Sagemont Lower School Campus as a new member of our Honor Society network. The decision to bring NEHS to their campus is an indication of a commitment to acknowledging the hard work of high achieving and well-rounded tudents.”
The Sagemont Upper School Campus also has some exciting news regarding their National Honor Society. They started a mentoring program this year where each NHS member has adopted a Sagemont 6th grade student for the entire school year. According to College counselor, Mellesia Nelson, “The goal of The Sagemont School's mentoring program is to provide our sixth grade students with not only a friendly face in high school, but also to provide them the opportunity to know someone who can assist them with class work at any time. NHS members should be and are role models and we want to instill their drive in our younger students.” The NHS mentors have already had some opportunities to interact socially with the 6th grade students. They have participated in a mentor luncheon and an ice cream social. In addition, the NHS plans to do volunteer projects in the community and will continue to sponsor Sagemont’s blood drives at the Upper School Campus.
