  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) January 16, 2015 - Sunil Thapar, Director of Vessel Operations for TBS Shipping Services, Inc., has been selected as a Professional Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals.

    Sunil Thapar began his career in 1979 on the Training Ship Rajendra, now called the Training Ship "Chanakya", a part of the Indian Maritime University in Mumbai, India. After graduating from the T.S. Rajendra, he commenced his sea career with the Shipping Corporation of India, followed by many other ship owning and ship management companies, such as Barber Canadian Pacific in London, Grand Seatrade in Hong Kong, and Anglo Eastern Ship Management, also in Hong Kong. He also sailed as captain from 1995-2005. During his 25+ year sailing career, Mr. Thapar sailed on various types of ships, including OBOs, capesize, Panamax bulkers, pure car carriers, container ships, passenger ships, and multipurpose vessels.

    Now, as the director of vessel operations for TBS Shipping Services, Mr. Thapar is in charge of cargo stowage and planning for the entire fleet, supervises the port captain and other marine positions, trains and develops staff in best practices of marine operations, provides guidance to shipmasters, manages operating costs and maximizes profitability of the voyages, assists in safety and quality in investigations and in writing policies, and works with the technical management department to ensure that vessels meet regulatory requirements and ships perform the voyages efficiently.

    "A career in merchant marine has been full of challenges, whether it was at sea or ashore," Mr. Thapar said, who has 35 years of experience thus far. "Having acquired the experience and skills working with various ship owning and ship management companies on various nationalities has made my credentials unique and has given me the inspiration to be in a leadership position and be able to use my experience in providing quality services to our clients by optimizing and efficiently monitoring the vessels' voyages."

    Mr. Thapar holds an MS in International Shipping from SUNY Maritime. In 2004, he was awarded the Gold Headed Cane by Port Authority of Sept Isles for navigating a Capesize bulker in frozen sea conditions and arriving safely to port in January 2004. This is a prestigious tradition in the maritime trade awarded once per year, signifying the captain's excellent skills, sound judgment, imagination, ingenuity, and determination, making winter navigation a reality on the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
