  • Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease) May 22, 2014 - Richard Miles, who spent 15 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Division wrongfully accused for a murder and attempted murder, began working on the concept of Miles of Freedom in October 2009 after his release.

Established in June 2012, Richard Miles promotes awareness of a need for a productive reentry system not only in Texas, but nationally. He shows potential employers the many benefits of hiring a person with a criminal background that has first come through the Miles of Freedom program through a variety of ways. The program offers the creation of productive networks for the organization, implementation if workshops that are conducive to the character building for men and women impacted by incarceration, and promotion of community involvement events that allow members to be part of an organization that gives back to the community, to name a few.

"My father, Bishop William L. Lloyd, passed away five months before I was released. His life and legacy inspires me to do good work. He fought for my name for 14 years to be cleared and we won," Mr. Miles said.

Certified through the Center for Non-Profit Management, Mr. Miles holds an AA degree from Trinity Valley Community College and is now pursuing an AS with the hopes of moving forward with a business degree. He hopes to become more active in social justice reform in the future to assist in creating productive programs pre/post incarceration. He also hopes that Miles of Freedom will become a program that begins within the prison system for men and women of faith, and upon their release granted the opportunity for reentry assistance. Miles of Freedom has since created a commercial lawn service that provides income for some members, as well as a visitation shuttle bus for family members. Their biggest goal, however, is to continue to expand and provide as many jobs as possible for their members.

Mr. Miles's case was printed in the Southwestern 3rd Edition; ExParte Richard Miles. He is the first non DNA/no confession exoneration. He has been honored to speak at numerous colleges, on Larry King Live, at the Center for International Law, Lutherans of America, and in June 2014 he will be preparing to speak at the US Conference of Mayors.
