August 19, 2008 - Mychillpills.com, a new social network has recently opened its gates to the disturbed of the world, proudly proclaiming "We've got Issues – Mental Health for the Masses." In an amusing, tongue in cheek site, the site endeavors to connect people who simply cannot connect, and offer them a safe and supportive place in which to share.
Sean Bowen, the site's creator told us that "I have a long history of depression and anxiety problems. I obviously had a lot of time on my hands, and while surfing the net all I found were depressing forums where people talked to each other about symptoms, pills, treatments and the like. I couldn't find myself in those forums, since they made me even more depressed than I already was."
And so http://www.mychillpills.com was born out of this frustration. In Sean's mind, depressed people obviously already know that they are depressed without being reminded all the time. "My Chill Pills is more than just a place for people to talk about their depression. I wanted to make sure that that it was for depressed people, as opposed to forums treating people as symptoms, where they could talk to others that shared the same problems, but they do not necessarily have to talk about their issues."
The fact that the site's creator is himself a veteran of depression and anxiety treatments is one of the things that make mychillpills.com so special. The site does not seek to provide treatment or advice, but only a place where people can allow themselves to be themselves, without the fear of people telling them that either it is all in their minds or other condescending advice. "I used to get people telling me all sorts of things that were either untrue, or else demeaning, like "get over it" or things like that. You won't see that kind of thing on mychillpills.com. If some one says his life is bad, people will agree with them, since they are all in the same boat, including me," Sean says.
So what does mychillpills offer? What most of the other mainstream social networks offer, but from a unique point of view. Users signing up will not be looking for others who share their affinity with Britney Spears, but they will find groups titled "All about Anxiety," or "Medication – yea or nay?" Sean hopes that the social network will grow and be an online home for the multitudes of Prozac Nation, since users will find more in common with their fellow mychillpills.com posters than any random users that people the huge social networks.
Right now, the formula seems to be working, as the site's membership has quadrupled over the past month and is still growing steadily. In today's emo culture, is mychillpills.com a place to celebrate depression? We asked Sean Bowen, who answered "Not necessarily. Morbid fascination has never really interested me, and I can't offer any real medical advice either. My Chill pills is just a place for people to hang out, and when they go see their therapists, I'm hoping they will come and complain about them on mychillpills."
