May 04, 2009 - Theft of equipment on construction sites, without a commercial security barrier or perimeter fence security, is a growing problem today. With underground markets, anyone can sell stolen merchandise such as cable, wire, portable offices, office trailers and building materials when not deterred by a security fence. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the construction industry in the United States lost nearly $1 billion in 2001 to equipment and tools theft.
The average contractor loses more than $13,000 a year due to theft and vandalism. No known studies have determined the distribution of the theft losses among the different sectors of the construction industry, but left undeterred by a modular fence system thieves can get away with valuable tools and equipment. Many insurance companies state that equipment losses due to vandalism on construction sites without a security fence alone account for up to 22% of large contractor equipment losses.
The criminal world has discovered a lucrative and growing market: heavy construction equipment. Figures suggest this is a growing problem and is getting worse every year on construction sites lacking a security fence or commercial security barrier. The insurance Services Office shows and increases of up to 20% in the value of equipment thefts every year since 1996. In reality only 10-15% of this equipment is ever recovered.
In an effort to provide a modular fence system with turnstiles and access control capabilities the Modular Access Control (MAC) portal can be dropped in any security fence line. By implementing a high quality commercial security barrier along with a MAC portal any construction site can significantly deter theft. According to Kevin Harrison, Vice President of MSSI, “we have had quite a few calls from people on major construction sites and one of their main concerns is equipment theft.” By procuring perimeter fence security and a MAC portal as a commercial security barrier solution many of our customers have reported a significant drop in stolen equipment.”
