March 23, 2009 - Even in a down economy, one demographic is still buying. And now, expectant moms are flocking to Mother Ink for the latest trend in belly art: safe, hand-drawn temporary tattoos to grace Mom's temporary bump.
President Laura Silverthorn created the design after wanting a Henna tattoo while pregnant and not being happy with her options. Mother Ink tattoos have always fit around the belly (roughly the size of a compact disc), but the newest tattoo incorporating baby footprints was specifically designed for mothers-to-be. For moms everywhere, a safe, low-cost, low-commitment option to Henna is now available.
The brightly colored tattoos are FDA-approved, non-toxic, and made with vegetable-based inks. Most designs are 3.75 inches across, with the newest maternity design slightly larger. Ease of application and removal, as well as peace-of-mind, give them a leg-up on the popular Henna which has been the recent target of safety concerns.
The new product line follows an ever-increasing trend of not just celebrating, but showcasing pregnancy. Graphic tees, belly painting, and Henna have all found their way to the maternity marketplace. The current explosion of maternity suppliers speaks to the fact that this is a market that is holding strong. Silverthorn is already reporting a rise a sales since branching out.
It remains to be seen how far Mother Ink will take their maternity line. If the current trends continue, their newest design will certainly be the first of many.
Mother Ink LLC, a philadelphia based company, launched last year with a product that seemed to be a contradiction in itself: temporary tattoos for adults.
