December 04, 2008 - After an arduous competition, "The Wile E. Coyotes" took first place in MIT Medical's "Kick Butt" design competition on Nov. 20. For the challenge, which was held as a part of American Cancer Society's yearly Great American Smokeout, each group had to construct an intentionally over-engineered gadget that would execute the simple task of stubbing out a cigarette (but in an exceedingly meandering and complicated manner), without direct human contact.
Both teams were judged on the complexity and creativity of their apparatus, although “The Wile E. Coyotes” outscored their competition ("Cig-ARRETE") partially because of malfunctions in their rivals’ design. In fact, due to glitches in their cigarette-extinguishing device, some intervention by “Cig-ARETTE” team members was required to keep the chain reaction going.
Besides the thrill of the win, “The Wile E. Coyotes” took home an oversized check in the amount of $750.00, which was donated by Signazon.com. The “Kick Butt” contest combined creativity and innovation to try and put an end to smoking, something that is counterproductive to all of us in this day and age. The “Wile E. Coyotes” were named as the competition winners and presented with their large check from Signazon in the E23/E25 atrium on MIT’S Boston campus.
