Misconceptions Dispelled. Urgent Skin Disease Screening Is Readily Available At One Of South Shore's Largest Dermatology Practices

Concerns about the lack of access to skin cancer screen have gripped Greater Boston residents.

(1888PressRelease) January 16, 2007 - The fear was driven by the recent January 7th Sunday Boston Globe front page article which asserted that patients often wait over a month or in some cases 73 days to obtain a dermatology appointment.

South Shore Skin Center, one of the regions largest dermatology practices with offices in Cohasset and Plymouth, noted that these delays are overstated.

"More than a year ago we implemented a special triage approach to make sure that urgent conditions and potentially 'at risk' patients are seen
immediately," noted Dr. Richard Eisen of South Shore Skin Care Center.

He elaborated, "Our intake personnel are trained to ask probing questions to help reveal threatening skin conditions such as a blistering rash, changing or bleeding mole, or a fever with a rash."

Dr. Ramzi Saad, also of South Shore Skin Care Center noted, "As an example of our responsiveness and commitment to care, we recently streamlined a new patient who reported a bleeding mole on his back. We saw him the next day. In doing so, we were able to quickly identify a melanoma, perform a biopsy and ensure that he received immediate treatment. The Globe suggested that, although there are 442 active dermatologists in Massachusetts, there are not enough skin specialists to serve the state's residents. "Of course we can't speak for all dermatology practices," noted Dr. Eisen, "but we want to put the public at ease and underscore that every effort is being made to see patients on a timely basis - immediately if necessary."

Dr. Saad added, "In addition to the two physicians in our practice, we have four highly trained physician assistants with whom we work to help manage the medical needs of our growing community."
