May 28, 2007 - Microsoft Dynamics GP or its former brand name – Great Plains Software eEnterprise/Dynamics in some posts are referred as requiring technical touch. This may be a true statement, however we think about it as you probably don’t think how car repair store does its job – you simply get it done. With Microsoft Great Plains you may need some homework, for example you need to understand Microsoft technologies: SQL Server, Microsoft Great Plains Dexterity (if you plan to undertake customization, or software modification route). At the same time, we think that if you believe that technology is too simple – why would you even have IT department or person in staff? Some technology highlights for you:
• GP Reporting. There are different opinions out there, in our opinion – you can use reliable reporting tools and the question is rather about creating reporting base: such as SQL stored procedure or SQL view – if you can’t create adequate report base – then neither Crystal Reports not MS SQL Server Reporting Services won’t do the job. GP has built-in ReportWriter and you can use it as the user to intuitively modify standard reports
• Integrations. Each business is to some extent unique (otherwise how would you expect your business to be competitive?) - this nice fact typically leads you to recognizing the drawback – you have to extend your ERP with integration to your unique business system (it might be realized in MS Excel, MS CRM, Oracle, Act!, Onyx, or custom software application)
• Working with MBS partner. When you deal with software installation, following data conversion, reports design, possible modifications, version update or also referred as upgrade – you should seek partner-like relations. Technology is not something like shoes or closes, where you could expect perfect quality – MRP technology has to accommodate existing accounting application with your unique business processes – and typically your technology partner tries the best – from your side be tolerable and patient and try to contribute
