January 29, 2007 - Based on this concept, Stefan's pieces may be worn in multiple ways, for a variety of occasions: a hood as a skirt, a dress as a scarf, or a scarf as a cape. One modal piece in the show was recently photographed and styled in 17 distinctly different looks.
Stefan's clothes are known for their distinctive interaction between structure and texture as they relate to the human form. His designs intonate many periods and styles, and range in affect from avant garde to vintage, from racy to classic. Transparency in Stefan's work calls attention to the interplay between multiple layers to form a single outfit. One can see the influence of his classical fine art education in his work, as well as inspiration from the Renaissance to the Victorian and Edwardian periods, from the Middle East, Korea, Japan, Ancient Egypt, and modern science fiction.
Every wide weave piece in the show is hand made by Stefan -- from the fabric itself to the final stitches in the crochet. Additionally, he has pioneered new methods of crochet-based construction, creating a complex lattice structure which will maintain its original shape and strength over the course of years.
Stefan has been compared to Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel in the beginning of their careers, especially relating to his work with transparency and his fashion philosophy. His early designs have been praised as works of art and museum pieces; he has developed an underground celebrity following that includes artists from many disciplines. One of the primary focuses of Stefan's career has been a cross-discipline conversation about social responsibility in the future of fashion, which has been coined "metacouture."
Stefan puts his ambition in this way: "I design clothes that are at once high fashion, couture, and, at the same moment beautiful clothes that you can wear like pajamas, or your favorite sweater." The goal of his current line is to create clothes that look and feel expensive, like fur, and at the same time are extraordinarily comfortable and invoke fashion conversation at its very best.
