April 18, 2009 - The client, Ms. Jones, was employed as a truck driver at a national transportation company. Ms. Jones, who is an African-American female, suffered ongoing harassment from her co-workers based not only on her race, but her sexual preference as well.
Several of her co-workers regularly made racially themed comments about Ms. Jones, including comments about Ms. Jones’ braided hairstyle and insults based on common stereotypes of African-Americans. In addition, Ms. Jones was regularly subject to derogatory comments about her sexual preference and her significant other. Also, Ms. Jones was forced to spend hours in trucks with one particular employee who spent that time, describing his sex life in detail despite Ms. Jones asking him to stop.
When Ms. Jones attempted to report these issues, the employer retaliated against her and eventually she was forced to resign. This is when Mesriani Law Group entered the picture to defend her rights.
The heavy load of prosecuting the case was increased even more by the actions of the transportation company after Ms. Jones’ termination. The company engaged in bullying tactics of potential witnesses and Ms. Jones’ significant other, who was still employed with the company. However, these tactics did not prevent Mesriani Law Group from getting the evidence they needed to force the company to enter into settlement negotiations. These negotiations eventually resulted in a settlement for Ms. Jones for $85,000.00.
