July 05, 2009 - The company's new building, at AllPoints at Anson near I-65, "doesn't look like much yet," said Berry Boudreaux, Medco's director of pharmacy practice. But he promises great things in the near future at the facility, which will dispense mail order prescription drugs nationwide.
"In this site now, there are really no pretty pictures to look at, and it's just primarily some rooms," Boudreaux said about the 452,000-square-foot facility expected to open this fall. Construction has been ongoing since the groundbreaking in March 2008.
The New Jersey-based Medco recently announced it will add a therapy research center for pharmacists trained in cancer medication to its plans.
"The pharmacists in the therapy research center will be counseling patients and filling prescriptions for oncology drugs, but oncology medicines aren't the only medications that we'll be dispensing here," Boudreaux said.
The new cost of the facility is anticipated to be more than $167 million -- $150 million for the original complex and $17.3 million for the therapy research center.
Around 1,400 jobs will be available. Positions include pharmacists, researchers, pharmacy technicians, engineering technologists and administrative staff.
"The more important thing is probably the availability of pharmacists," Boudreaux said about the new positions that primarily will be filled locally.
"We have two schools of pharmacy we draw from, which are Butler University and Purdue," he said. "Our site is right in between those two locations, which makes it very easy to get the staff we need."
Medco plans to begin hiring its first pharmacists for the research center in September.
The Boone County site will become Medco's third automated dispensing pharmacy. The other two are its headquarters in Franklin Lakes, N.J., and a facility in Las Vegas.
"A lot of effort was put into consideration when deciding where (Medco) wanted to be," Boudreaux said. "(We) knew that we wanted to be in the middle part of the country to serve as the Midwest location."
Boudreaux said the decision to build Medco's latest facility in this particular part of the country was no accident.
"Medco has great history as an innovative company. The citizens in this part of the country are innovative, and we want to tap into that."
