  • Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2016 - Reframing the way we approach office spaces and the creative process, Mecca Design and Production, a boutique scenic element and services design/build group, designed and finished out an open-concept, collaborative workspace or "garage" for Capital One's corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas. Self-described thinkers, problem solvers and rebels, the Capital One Digital design team desired a space that would not only cultivate inspiration, but also encourage the team to interact in a collaborative, inventive way and lend itself to casual encounters and novel conversations. To meet these needs Mecca designed flexible spaces, customized to foster both collaboration and solo brainstorming by incorporating garage doors that slide back and forth on red tracks to partition off different sized areas as well as custom louvered doors that can remain open or closed.

The spaces include Front of the House meeting space near the custom Capital One gas tank and sold sign as well as brainstorming areas with custom seating, including a dissected 1941 vintage car created to carve out a cozy meeting space. Knowing that the look and feel of the space as well as the details contribute to the overall creative process and enjoyment, Mecca fabricated a distinctive chandelier out of auto parts as well as new front door to anchor the space. Two monitor walls contain nine monitors on each wall giving designers a multi-media space to utilize and share ideas. One of the most unique areas, the Activity Area, comes filled with one-of-a-kind seating areas that people may rush to sit in and call dibs: tables made out of giant Tinker Toys, Erector Set pieces, and Legos, surrounded by original Lichtenstein-inspired and Warhol-inspired artwork on the walls.

Further, knowing that it is important to recognize stellar concepts and ideas, two trophy cases were designed to hold custom license plates and trophies to acknowledge achievements. Interestingly, research has shown that physical environment can boost creativity, and that subtle cues significantly increase creative output. In the report published in the online journal Science, "Blue or Red? Exploring the Effect of Color on Cognitive Task Performances," Ravi Mehta and Juliet Zhu found that red unconsciously motivates us to be cautious, analytical and use critical thinking (i.e, stop signs, emergency vehicles, danger,) and blue increases creative output as it influences a more free-flowing and creative mindset (think blue sky, ocean, tranquility.) Further, a study in the Journal of Consumer Research by Zhu, Mehta and A. Cheema, "Research: Too Much, Too Little Noise Turns Off Consumers, Creativity," a moderate level of sound produces "just enough distraction to lead to the ability to think abstractly and consequently leads to increased creativity. Taking into account the effect of the work setting, Mecca hopes this custom space will maximize creative output for these problem solvers.

Designed to spark ideas and support the evolving design process, Capital One Digital has locations across the country including Tysons Corner, VA; Richmond, VA; San Francisco, CA; Chicago, IL, Flatiron District, NYC as well as select Capitol One Labs. This creative team tasks themselves to use smart design and technology to invigorate banking and empower customers interested in home and auto purchasing, and their new digs in Plano give them a modern set of tools to do just that.
