Mayor Jerry Sanders Proclaims November 7th as San Diego Sockers Day in the City of San Diego

San Diego’s only professional indoor soccer team welcomed the written proclamation days before the team’s opening game at the Del Mar Arena.

(1888PressRelease) November 07, 2009 - San Diego, CA – The San Diego Sockers’ season opener, this Saturday, will mark more than just the team’s comeback to San Diego: Mayor Jerry Sanders presented San Diego Sockers’ team members and General Manager, Phil Salvagio, with a written proclamation today, declaring November 7, 2009 as San Diego Sockers Day in the City of San Diego.

The Sockers, San Diego’s ten-time champion indoor soccer team, which folded in 2004, received the signed proclamation in honor of its continued support and positive impact on the local and surrounding communities.

In addition to accepting the declaration of Sockers Day, the team presented Mayor Sanders with a personalized Sockers’ jersey and discussed details of the upcoming season.

“As we enter the 2009-2010 season, the ongoing support from The Mayor and the City of San Diego, after a five-year hiatus, is both encouraging for our team and a fundamental part of our anticipated success,” said Phil Salvagio, General Manager and Head Coach of the San Diego Sockers.

With a growing popularity of soccer throughout San Diego, The Mayor proposed the idea of obtaining the Sockers’ support in promoting the city’s efforts to secure a future FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup in San Diego.

The San Diego Sockers will play their first game of the 2009-2010 season at the Del Mar Arena (2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar) on November 7th at 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased directly from the Sockers website.
