July 04, 2009 - Outstanding speakers, informative panel discussions, high-level delegates and cutting-edge asset managers ensured that the marcus evans trilogy of Investments events - Distressed Investing Summit, Fund of Hedge Funds Summit and Private Wealth Management Summit - were a huge success.
Keynote for the Distressed Investing Summit John Calverley, Head of Research, North America for Standard Chartered Bank shared his views on predicting and managing market risk. In his discussion Mr Calverley drew comparisons between the current US economy and Japan’s pre-growth economy. He was also a participant in a panel discussion entitled “The Economic Outlook for the US and Global Economies: Assessing what the Future Holds” which was moderated by Todd Benjamin, Former Financial Editor, CNN. Other presenters who shared their views on this topic included: Davide Furceri, Economist, Office of the Chief Economist, OECD and John Lonski, Managing Director and Chief Economist, Moody’s Capital Markets Group.
Michael Dubin, CEO of The LongChamp Group spoke to his peers regarding the future of the Hedge Fund Industry and the lessons to be learned. Mr Dubin believes that Hedge Funds are evolving with new classifications, simpler models and a new, re-aligned structure that better matches investor interests. He concluded that assets under management would return, diversified portfolios will dominate and customized solutions will compliment fund of funds. Mr Dubin was also the facilitator for an interactive roundtable discussion entitled “Due Diligence for Hedge Funds and Private Equity.”
Another panel discussion that created much interest was titled “Fallout from Hedge Fund Industry Consolidation- Survival of the Fittest”. The panellist debated the strategies for dealing with inept funds and identifying surviving fund of funds as well as how to make the most out of opportunities that may arise during consolidation. Panellist were: Geoffrey Lasry, CAIA, Associate Director, Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company; Jay Steinle, Managing Director, Lighthouse Partners and George Yepes, Managing Director, Gottex Fund Management.
