March 14, 2009 - A man made incident involving the local population and Western Region Hospital created tensions among local population, WRH Staff and in fact whole of Pokhra. This incident resulted in huge inflow of patients to Manipal Teaching Hospital and thereby intervention of Health Ministry complimenting Manipal for its commendable services.
A 9 year old girl, a local resident bitten by a dog on 6th March evening was administered anti rabies vaccination in Western Regional Hospital (WRH). She responded adversely to the injection and breathed last shortly after.
Following the incident, tension mounted in the hospital as patient party supported by locals went on rampage and vandalized the WRH hospital. All the doctors and Para medical staff of the hospital went on strike in protest of the incident. In view of the heightened agitation and chaos, the management of WRH discharged 300 admitted patients and declared the hospital closed indefinitely. All other private hospitals and nursing homes too supported the movement and closed down on Saturday morning.
Seeing the worsening situation the Medical Superintendent of Western Region Hospital requested Manipal Hospital Director for help and support for its Patients. The WRH Medical Superintendent –informed Manipal Hospital Director that they are discharging all the patients and requested for good medical care and attention to all patients.
Manipal Teaching Hospital rose to the occasion and ensured that despite the limited resources, constraints in trained Manpower it put up all its best foot forward. All the staff as well as medical students rendered emergency as well as routine medical care. Manipal provided all the care needed to patients. By working round the clock and were able to cater for emergency. The pharmacies (IP & OP) also worked overtime.
Health Secretary along with team of doctors detailed by Ministry of Health, Govt.Of Nepal visited the hospital on 09.03.3009 and appreciated the laudable services rendered by Manipal Teaching Hospital in the hours of crisis. The MTH census on Sunday (08.03.09) was recorded as high as 833 out patients and 412 In patients
