Manheim Township Ambulance Association Announces Community Outreach Initiative

Ambulance service shifts gears towards prevention.


(1888PressRelease) January 06, 2009 - Lancaster, PA – Manheim Township Ambulance Association announces a Public Outreach and Education Initiative unparalleled in the commonwealth. A combination of community outreach, health education, CPR training and AED access are slated to begin between early January and early March of this year.

Beginning with an expansion of a education program, the Ambulance Association will be traveling the area, offering at inexpensive safety, CPR, and first aid education to local industry. This program will not only provide the much need safety and compliance training to the employee’s within the region, it will also help to reduce mortality with industry in the region.

“An EMS program can only be truly successful at saving lives if as many laypeople get involved as possible. Those first few minutes are critical” said Terri Smith, longtime educator and Executive Director of Manheim Township Ambulance Association.

Shortly after that, the Association will be unveiling a CPR education initiative, which takes aim to train as many residents as possible in CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), with a stated goal of 15% of the residents in the Township. This accommodates for a total of approximately 3500 people.

The next step is a fall prevention initiative, which will take referrals from local aging agencies to connect our residents to fall prevention devices, after being assessed for falls by our staff. Our goal is to reduce the risk for recurrent falls, a common injury in the elderly population.

Expanding on the theme of prevention, January begins the health education outreach initiative This program calls for agreements with local business and industry, to distribute information to local residents regarding a quarterly health topic. Lectures at local retirement communities and civic groups combined with the movement towards developing PSA’s to be played via both television and radio will allow for all types of learning to be utilized.

We will be combining with cardiology offices within the region to identify key “at risk” patients for cardiac arrest. This will allow or organization to push to train family members and friends in CPR, getting the training where it is truly the most needed.
