Manhasset’s Integrative Healing Center & Spa Offers Free Health Information to Beat the Flu

Local holistic health and wellness center offers free health information to its community on Long Island about avoiding swine flu.

New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 05, 2009 - The Integrative Healing Center and Spa located on Northern Blvd in Manhasset, as a community service and, in an effort to quell the hype about H1N1 flu, also referred to as swine flu, is stepping up its efforts to educate the public.

The Center is offering residents of Long Island (including Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn) a free 15 minute telephone health alert consultation. The Healing Center, specializing in a holistic approach, is urging the community to call 516-676-0200 to speak with one of their expert practitioners about flu related health concerns.

Integrative Healing Center is urging the community not to buy into fear promulgated by the media but rather empower itself with knowledge.

The Center, a high profile holistic hub serving the Tri-state area, suggests shutting off the TV to avoid media coverage which often creates the news rather than reporting it.

Kristine Blanche, a certified physician assistant, and founder of the center, also cautioned that one poor night's sleep can reduce immunity. She advised that lifestyle changes be made if a sufficient amount of sleep is not obtained, e.g.: take a nap, skip that late evening the next day and take extra time for rest and relaxation.

Additionally, impairment of the immune system often results from unhealthy dietary habits resulting in the body’s inability to respond properly to exposure to viral and bacterial agents.

Dietary habits affecting immunity are excessive consumption of dairy products, excessive alcohol intake and ingesting fats such as red meat. In addition, excessive sugar consumption can result in a 50 percent drop in immunity for 1-to-5 hours after ingestion. The above burdens the body’s detoxification system limiting proper immune response.

In order to stay healthy, an appropriate intake of vitamins is essential to ensure the manufacture of sufficient antibodies. Those vitamins include specifically: vitamin E, vitamin C and vitamin A. Minerals such as selenium zinc are essential, as well.

Stress, because of its debilitating effects, utilizes energy the body requires to balance, maintain and repair the immune system leaving one vulnerable to infections.

Blanche urged the importance of frequent hand washing and recommended a product called Thieves® from Young Living Essential Oils. Thieves® is a blend of oils that has been proven to be highly effective anti-bacterial and anti-viral agents.

Thieves® was created based on university-conducted research on four thieves in France who eluded plague centuries ago by protecting themselves with cloves, rosemary and other aromatics while robbing victims.

The proprietary Thieves® blend demonstrated scientifically proven efficacy in supporting the immune system and assisting in maintaining good health.

Integrative Healing Center and Spa's medical director is Kamau Kokayi, M.D. a graduate of Cornell University and Yale University School of Medicine and host of "Global Medicine Review" is heard weekly on Wednesdays on 99.5, WBAI-FM, at 12 noon.

He recommends gradually increasing consumption of Vitamin C as it is helpful in fighting infections from virtually all pathogens. Also, it helps prevent the common cold and will decrease the duration of it.

Other herbs Dr. Kokayi recommends to boost immunity are oil of oregano which has documented effectiveness against a wide range of bacteria and viruses. Echinacea which should be from the root of purpura or augustifolia; it has potent stimulatory actions on the immune system including anti-bacterial and anti-viral-like properties.

For best results and heightened innate immunity, generally, echinacea’s use is recommended for use at the onset and throughout the course of an illness.

Astragalus is a Chinese herb traditionally used as a tonic for strengthening the body's resistance to disease. Its use has successfully demonstrated a reduction in the frequency and duration of the common cold.

The Healing Center, urges increasing fluid intake to stay well hydrated. Integrative stresses the value of fresh air, sunshine, staying on a healthy balanced diet by adding lots of healthy organic fruits and vegetables, sufficient rest and relaxation, meditation and cleansing to detoxify give the body the medicinal tools to stay well.

Blanche and Kokayi also recommend checking with a licensed physician before making any changes in your healthcare regime.
