February 21, 2009 - In a recent podcast with Wayne Turmel of Management Issues ((http://www.management-issues.com/2009/2/12/podcast/the-working-week-88.asp) ), Power urges managers within organisations not to ignore the importance of building their personal brand online as the world changes to embrace a more supplier-led marketplace.
Power argues that as more City workers and senior executives are forced to enter the unemployment pool, those who have invested in building a personal brand for themselves will find it far easier to secure new work, be it in another organisation or as a self-employed consultant.
“Who you are online, how respected you are by your peers and how visible you are online will be what secures your future in 21st Century business. What people say about you is increasingly becoming more important than what you do, or what experience or credentials you hold”, says Power, founder of the UK’s first business social network Ecademy (www.ecademy.com), which has millions of users worldwide.
Power says that whilst in 20th Century business, broadcasting was sufficient, new world philosophies now focus on how you treat people and how your knowledge contributes to the world around you and that self-promoting no longer has the same impact as it did in the past. This applies to individuals and companies when creating a following.
“Many senior executives have been nurtured in a world where self-promotion was the way to get noticed, but the rules have changed. Managers who think they are safe in their jobs need to start thinking about what their personal brand stands for, what their reputation is and how people view them and their intentions. Inside and external to their company. It is not enough to have a brand that is only associated with your company. The true mark of success is when people ‘talk about you when you are not in the room’, to their peers and their wider network.
In such a turbulent economy, people need to realise that it is far safer to be a supplier of six, than an employee of one”, says Power.
