Man sends nutritional supplements for soldiers

By Jennifer R. Hill

The feet of a Vietnam veteran are probably not the most attractive sight to see, but several soldiers in Iraq may think Larry Thrasher's feet are just magnificent. Thrasher's minister, Tony Collins of Cornerstone, a non-denominational church in Moulton, recently anointed Thrasher's feet after he brought 66,000 packets of A.C.T. Drink pouches for the Alabama National Guard units stationed in Iraq.

Thrasher keeps Romans 10:15 in mind as he speaks about his mission. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!’”

Thrasher, a resident of Hartselle, has implored several surrounding churches, businesses and individuals to help with his crusade to bring much-needed nutritional drinks to troops in Baghdad. On average, temperatures in Iraq range from 116 and 134 degrees this time of year. Mary Sulcer, an owner of Herbs & More in Athens, said the nutritional supplement that Thrasher is taking the troops " A.C.T. (Healthier) Energy Drink" is different from other sugary drinks. Most importantly, she said, it offers good doses of potassium, B vitamins, amino acids and fruit juice concentrates that give plenty of nourishment to replace electrolytes and vitamins lost in severe heat.

Sulcer said she and Thrasher have known each other for years and he sent her an email about his mission.

"We sell A.C.T. Drinks in our stores, but we didn't know we could use this as a mission,” Sulcer said. We sold over 7,000 A.C.T. Drinks just last week alone.

On a mission

Thrasher's mission began about a year ago when a missionary gave him some A.C.T. "On The Go" Energy Drink packets to add to water. He placed them in the console of his car and forgot about them until one hot day this spring.

A coincidental encounter at a little country store got Thrasher thinking about what he could do. “I was minding my own business heading back from Somerville, when I felt the Lord say, ‘Pull in here,’he said.

Thrasher went inside the store with an A.C.T. "On The GO" Energy packet in his pocket and struck up a conversation with a man wearing fatigues. The man was a Vietnam veteran and had just gotten back from serving in Iraq. He said they talked about the temperature over there and the man said, “Our energy is just zapped.” Being an Army and Vietnam veteran, Thrasher could understand what the soldiers in Iraq were enduring.

Thrasher thought about the situation and what he could do to help. He told his wife he felt God was leading him to take these nutritional supplements to the troops. That Sunday night, Collins petitioned his congregation to get involved with helping the troops.

My wife and I just looked at each other when he said we have got to get involved with the soldiers in Iraq,” Thrasher said.

The steps were laid out before him to proceed from there, he said. Sulcer called Thrasher after she attended church Sunday.

Lindsay Lane preacher Dusty McLemore had talked about missions during his Sunday sermon. He said, ‘"All of you may not be able to go, but you can send", Sulcer said.

Thrasher's mission then became Sulcer's mission, and they enlisted others in their crusade.

Delivering the package

Thrasher will deliver the A.C.T. "On The Go" drinks to at least seven Alabama National Guard units in the middle on August. Several officials including Alan L. Hinson, coordinator for Operation Grateful Heart Office of the Governor of Alabama, and Lieutenant Commander Robert Horton in Montgomery have lent their support and connections to carry out the task.

Thrasher plans to gather 66,000 packets of the A.C.T. "On The Go" drink in an effort to give each soldier 60 packets. Boxes of the A.C.T. Energy Drink contain 30 packets at a cost of $37.95 a box.

Thrasher cannot help but be moved to tears when he talks about people being led by God to give to the troops. He points out that many youth are giving, including an 11-year-old girl who gave $100 and a 13-year-old boy who recently gave $50 at a church Thrasher visited.

Vance Dutton, 7, a student at Bible School, recently helped his grandmother in order to earn money to be able to donate a box of A.C.T. "On The GO" energy drinks to the cause. Dutton's grandmother, Pat Dutton, a regular at Herbs & More, said her grandson helped her fold clothes and take out garbage to earn the money.

Individuals like Ali Turner, who spent three years with the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division of the Department of Defense in Iraq, are helping box the A.C.T. "On The Go" drink packets for shipping.

What has wearied the soldiers are that they are being marginalized, she said. “We need to let them know we're right there, as long as it takes.”

Small gestures, such as sending the A.C.T. energy drink packets, can help keep soldiers healthy in body, mind and spirit, she said.

The A.C.T. energy drink will energize their body, the Holy Spirit will energize their lives,” Thrasher said.

He plans to make additional trips after August to energize the troops.
