August 31, 2008 - International escape artist Curtis Lovell II will attempt to escape from being buried alive on Halloween evening at 6:30 p.m. in the City of Grand Terrace, California, at Pico Park as part of its Halloween Haunt.
The great escape artist Harry Houdini faced one of man's greatest fears by being buried alive. Locked in shackles, he was lowered into a grave. Dirt poured onto him. He escaped alive and vowed never to attempt such a stunt again. He died on Halloween 1926, this time never returning from his grave.
Lovell was approached by Acting City Manager Steve Berry to create a stunt that had a Harry Houdini flair. Lovell thought of being buried alive.
“I have been dreaming of this stunt since I was 11 and read about it in a Houdini book, but I wanted to add my own twist to this escape,” Lovell said. Remembering other modern day escape artists who have attempted this stunt and lost their lives, Lovell’s twist will allow spectators to witness his escape in full view on stage.
