November 30, 2007 - Mecklenburg County Sherriff, Sgt. Rodney Rivers will be the keynote speaker at the 2007 Beatties Fords Youth Academic and Athletic Awards on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Rameses Temple at 12 pm.
Sgt. Rivers, a native of Charlotte, grew up playing Pop Warner football through Long Creek Optimist Athletic Organization. A scholar and athlete throughout his Jr and Sr high school years, Rivers accepted a football scholarship to attend NCCU. While at NCCU, he was an honor student and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Fellowship of Advancing Athletics. He graduated with a Criminal Justice degree.
Rodney Rivers has spent the past 19 years working for the Mecklenburg Sherriff’s Department, volunteering and mentor local youth. He’s coached the Bandits football team for Derita, revamped the coaching staff for the Plaza Rams and has coached track and field for the Queen City Relay’s and Charlotte Elite AAU track clubs. His dedication had inspired many of these youths to advance to high school, collegiate and professional levels.
“As coaches and role models it’s never too early to start player development,” says Greg Ratliff, Co-Founder and Head Coach for the Beatties Ford Jr Midget team. “By doing this, we hope to encourage better decision making and prevent some of the incidents we’ve seen from athletes in the news this past year.”
The Beatties Ford Youth Academic and Athletic Association was founded in 2004 by Keith Booker and Greg Ratliff. BFYAAA’s mission is to develop youth into productive, contributing members of society through a combined emphasis on academics and athletics. In addition to football and cheerleading, the organization offers tutoring and mentorship opportunities. For more information visit www.beattiesfordsaints.com
