June 27, 2007 - Last night was the primier of Shaq's Big Challenge.Childhood obesity is a fast-growing epidemic in the U.S. Obese children face a shorter lifespan due to weight-related illnesses such as increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. But hope has arrived for America's children. Shaquille O'Neal, a four-time NBA champion and a role model to millions, is on a quest to battle this scourge and help kids across America live more healthfully.
Local trainer and the Owner of Results 4 Sure Personal Training, Rafael Moret, has developed a fitness program for kids called F.I.T.T. Coach.
F.I.T.T. COACh is an acronym for what our program is about and the principles behind it. The Program COACh is: Conditioning for Adolescents and Children. The Principles FITT: Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type, are what we use to make sure the Kids don't get bored and get the fitness RESULTS they need.
The conditioning portion of the program is based on the 4 Pillars of Human Motion. It provides NEW Ideas for children's fitness.
The 4 Pillars are categorized into 4 movements:
Level Changes = Raising and lowering one's center of mass (COM), squatting, lunging, stepping, etc.
Locomotion = Standing in various positions, while executing various upper body movements, biomotor drills and single leg dynamic movements.
Pushing and Pulling = Simple hands and elbows away from the shoulder for pushing and hands and elbows toward the shoulders for pulling.
Rotation = All changes in direction and rotational movements.
Most circuits revolve around a specific component, like cardio or toning or flexibility. This type of system incorporates the BEST of everything allowing unparalleled applications and diversity. That means we can do cardiovascular exercises that enhances motor skills, and strength training exercise that develop muscles and bones, calisthenics that help flexibility and body awareness, plus balance and stability exercises to enhance your posture. All that means is we will use a lot of different things for our workout, bodyweight, medicine balls, bands and other tools.
In order for kids do develop the habit of exercise, it need to be fun and energetic to make sure the kids want to keep coming back.
