Edison, NJ (1888PressRelease)
February 13, 2008 - We’ve heard much lately about the ills of global warming, deforestation and water pollution. And we’ve heard that we all need to reduce our “carbon footprint.”
But what’s a homeowner supposed to do? After all, most of us are living in a typical wood-frame house, not a geodesic dome perched atop an infinite source of clean geothermal energy.
While saving the environment may be a dizzying task, there are still many ways that we can lead greener lives by making some sensible changes in how we do things in our homes. At the 19th-annual New Jersey Home Show and Interior Design Expo – scheduled for March 7-9 at the New Jersey Exposition Hall in Edison – there will be more than 400 exhibitors, many of whom will be unveiling the latest generation of environmentally-friendly products for everyday living.
There will also be plenty of “green ideas for the home,” ranging from simple low-cost or no-cost tips to renovation projects. Whatever the size of the project, the common theme of this year’s home show is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot of green to have a greener home.
At the home show’s ribbon-cutting ceremony – with a green ribbon, of course – the public is invited to a mini-expo, in which seven prominent exhibitors will demonstrate seven easy ways to make your home more energy efficient. That event is at 2 p.m. on March 7 at the entrance to the expo hall.
These exhibitors include:
• PSE&G of Newark, which will show some simple, low-cost steps a homeowner can take to improve energy efficiency, such as installing compact fluorescent light bulbs and a programmable thermostat.
• Solar Illuminations of Caldwell, which will showcase how good old sunshine can light homes and power attic fans and hot water heaters.
• Somerville Lumber Company of Bridgewater, which will be talking about bamboo, cork and liptus flooring, made from fast growing plants and trees. These are good, renewable resources that spare our hardwood forests from the chainsaw.
• Alure Home Improvements of Plainview, NY, which will demonstrate how the Energy Star rated wall panels in their basement finishing systems and their attic insulation products can save energy.
• Valiant Home Remodelers of Carteret – which will show how to save energy by replacing old drafty windows and doors with new, energy efficient ones.
• EcoQuest International of Andover, which will demonstrate a water purification system that cleans water before it goes into a washing machine, eliminating the need for detergent and bleach and leaving the water that goes out of the home non-polluted.
• Comfortable Energy Efficient Homes of Martinsville, which will talk about the comprehensive “Energy Audits” they perform in people’s homes to show how green projects can pay for themselves over time.
These exhibitors – and many others at the home show - are showing that an investment today in green technology for your home will save you money in the long run. In addition, selecting green materials over traditional ones for a planned remodeling project can create a pleasing environment in the home while easing the burden on the environment.
The “green” ribbon cutting will be a great source of information for any homeowner. But it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what will be available from these companies and from all the exhibitors and special guests during the three-day show. Guests include Andrew Dan-Jumbo from The Learning Channel’s “White You Were Out,” Kevin O’Conner of “This Old House” and Ralph Snodsmith of “The Garden Hotline.”
