  • (1888PressRelease) December 19, 2014 - BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS - Libman Education announced the release of a new course designed to help those involved with professional and facility coding to meet the challenge of assigning E/M codes quickly and accurately. Titled E/M Coding: Evaluation and Management Coding for Professional Fee Services and slated for a January 15, 2015 release, the course is authored by Lynn Kuehn, MS, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA - a nationally recognized coding expert with more than 22 years of E/M coding experience. The course is specifically designed for individuals with little or no coding experience who are being asked to do more. Specifically, physicians and physician office staff in small practices, Hospital outpatient coders and Compliance professionals who may now be responsible for the challenge of E/M codes.

"Incorrect coding of evaluation and management services can cost the healthcare industry and organizations dearly," said Kuehn. "In March, the Office of Inspector General announced that approximately 55% of E/M services billed in 2010 and allowed by Medicare, did not meet all applicable program requirements. This resulted in $6.7 billion in improper payments and intense audit risk."

"This course is designed to help organizations avoid these audit pitfalls," Kuehn added. "The time required to complete the course is minimal - a small investment for the benefits it can bring. Students begin with the basics and learn code assignment step-by-step in just seven lessons. Very little coding knowledge is required; just a working knowledge of medical terminology."

E/M Coding: Evaluation and Management Coding for Professional Fee Services is appropriate for the following healthcare professionals:

    - Physicians and physician office staff, including billers, coders, practice managers, and medical assistants
    - Hospital outpatient coders who assign both facility and professional fee codes for the same service
    - Coders responsible for assigning professional fee codes for Outpatient and Emergency Department services
    - Coders who assign professional fee codes for Hospitalists
    - Compliance professionals who need to validate the selection of E/M codes by coding staff or physicians.

The course teaches students to 1) understand the 1995 and 1997 E/M documentation guidelines, know the difference between guidelines and how to select the appropriate guidelines; 2) learn to select the correct level of code based on the provider work and documentation; 3) maximize accuracy and save time by streamlining the documentation process; 4) ensure compliance with E/M guidelines for all patient encounters; 5) prevent systematic under-coding or over-coding of services; and 6) ensure accurate coding leading to correct reimbursement.
