  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) December 22, 2010 - In what can be read as a humorous little holiday piece about a good man gone bad the most recent satirical article published by OffTheGridNews.com entitled "Santa Claus Seeks Legal Authority to Rule by Decree" conjures up a few images outside of jolly Saint Nick. http://www.offthegridnews.com/2010/12/21/santa-claus-seeks-legal-authority-to-rule-by-decree/

Of course the timing of the article comes just days after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was granted special powers by the country's parliament that will allow him to pass laws by decree. Chavez will need no support from congress during the 18 months he has this dangerous authority, a period of time that many of his critics believe he will use to strengthen his goal to create a dictatorship.

In the OTGN article we find a desperate Santa Claus calling on the "Upper Arctic National Assembly" to "to grant him broad powers to rule by decree for the next thirteen months" due to weak holiday sales. While Claus's special use of powers would "ensure a fast-track turnaround of the holiday economy through a judicious use of buying decrees and no-return policies," something that sounds eerily like a financial stimulus plan that American tax-payers have grown to despise, the reasoning is almost as absurd as Chavez's plans to use his ultimate powers to address the devastation his country faces following the floods and landslides that have killed at last 40 people and left 140,000 homeless.

Not to be lost on the reader of the Santa Claus power grab is the fact that U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley points out the man in red has "asked the Upper Arctic National Assembly for decree powers twenty-four times in the last six hundred years." It was Crowley who recently told reporters in Washington that Chavez has asked for authority to rule by decree four times in twelve years.

While the satirical piece clearly displays a delusional gift-giver willing to use any excuse to grab power the article is a fair representation of what Chavez has become. Hiding behind the guise that his actions are simply for the good of the people the Venezuelan leader has repeatedly shown that his efforts to extend his term and expand his powers are nothing more than the textbook actions of a megalomaniac.

U.S. criticism of Claus in the article is stern as Homeland Security Deputy Secretary, Jane Holl Lute, warns "granting broad decree powers to someone, like Claus, with direct access to every living room with a Christmas tree, is simply unacceptable," a sentiment she has expressed before about allowing Chavez such sweeping authority.

In response to the criticism Claus retorts "You want to say that to my beard? The American empire is afraid, not just of my omnibus present drop, but of the very idea of Christmas itself. I have had to lay-off thousands of elves thanks to Wall Street insiders who have been very bad this year. Do you know how heartbreaking it is to see elves floating aimlessly about the Arctic Sea on tiny 'bergs." This diatribe fits Chavez so well the dictator may consider growing a beard just so he can use it the next time he speaks at the UN.

Of course it wouldn't be a good satirical piece without Claus's outrage being summed up by his better half, Mrs. Claus, by simply stating "He gets this way sometimes." It seems the world has grown use to Chavez doing the same thing; unfortunately Mrs Claus's solution for Santa, "a big, warm mug of milk," may not do the trick for Chavez.

The OTGN article, like any solid satirical piece, will certainly make you smile whether you see the parallels between Claus and Chavez or not. With the holidays upon us and Santa getting his reindeer ready is there a better time of the year for a Ho Ho Ho….Hugo Chavez?
