Corpus Christi, TX (1888PressRelease)
March 28, 2009 - The next monthly Wave Walkers event -- Step Up for Your Community -- is March 31, 8-10 a.m., in the second level food court. The event will highlight Corpus Christi non-profits working to help the community, including Senior Companion and United Way of the Coastal Bend. More than 500 people have already signed up for the free mall walkers club.
“This is a tough time for organizations that depend on donations and volunteers since both seem to be in short supply these days,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for some of these worthwhile groups to meet and talk with some of our Wave Walkers members. Our members may find additional ways to improve their living or health situation and the organizations may find great prospective volunteers. It’s a potential ‘win-win’ for everyone.”
Other participating organizations include the American Diabetes Association, Bayfest, Big Brother Big Sisters, Buccaneer Days, City of Corpus Christi Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Corpus Christi Medical Center Auxiliary, Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.
In addition to learning about community organizations, members attending the March 31 event can take part in a variety of fitness activities with The Corpus Christi Athletic Club. Texas A&M Health Science Center Coastal Bend Health Education Center will perform health screenings, including tracking members’ weight, body mass index and body fat percentage.
Wave Walkers membership is free and includes a welcome kit and membership card providing shopping incentives and discounts from La Palmera merchants such as Trade Secret, Bourbon Street Candy Co. and Nine West. In addition to monthly events, members continue making their daily trek around the mall.
