KLAS Rates 7 Speech Recognition Systems

KLAS spoke with more than 300 healthcare professionals to investigate both front-end and back-end speech recognition vendors. Beyond features and functionality, differing client satisfaction stemmed from the way the vendor interacts with the client via the sales force, support infrastructure, and executive team.

(1888PressRelease) July 04, 2008 - While patient visits are growing at a compounding rate of three percent per year, the requirements for documentation are increasing disproportionately to that growth due to the heightened regulations and the desire for greater transparency in preparation for pay for performance. Currently, dictation and transcription are the primary means of documenting these visits and populating the patient record with the relevant information.

In recent years, healthcare provider organizations have reported dramatic workflow efficiency and cost savings benefits by adoption of speech recognition technology. These reports have motivated a great many providers to consider speech recognition as the next step in automating their data flow and documentation. The recent KLAS study about the vendors that supply speech recognition technology was prompted by that movement toward automation.

The core of speech recognition technology is the speech engine itself. All of the vendors in this study utilized a common set of speech engines. The features that differentiated the vendors were the bolt-on technologies built on top of the speech engine, such as the various user interfaces, administrative tools, and provider-driven workflows. Beyond these features and functionality, differing client satisfaction stems from the way the vendor interacts with the client via the sales force, support infrastructure, and executive team.

For this report, KLAS spoke with more than 300 healthcare professionals to investigate both front-end and back-end speech recognition vendors. Front-end products qualifying for inclusion in this report were Agfa TalkStation, MedQuist SpeechQ, Nuance PowerScribe, and Nuance RadWhere. Back-end products qualifying for inclusion in this report were Dolbey Fusion Speech, eScription EditScript, and Nuance EXSpeech.
