Killeen Lauds Successful Farm Waste Management Scheme

Tony Killeen T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (with special responsibility for Fisheries and Forestry), has described the revised Farm Waste Management Scheme as a hugely successful programme for the Government and farmers alike.

(1888PressRelease) August 28, 2008 - The Clare T.D. and IFA member added that Scheme’s success was the result of one of the biggest ever State supported investments in farm infrastructure.

His comments follow the release of figures by his Department showing that a total of over EUR288m has been paid to date under the revised Scheme, of which EUR174.5m has been paid so far this year.

‘The Scheme will have significant environmental benefits and will assist farmers to meet the requirements of the Nitrates Directive. The level of investment by farmers is a clear vote of confidence in the sector’, explained Minister of State Killeen.

He continued, ‘The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food continues to process payment claims in respect of approved work under the FWM scheme. Notwithstanding the difficult budgetary situation, my colleague Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith has assured farmers that payment will be made to all farmers who complete works in accordance with the terms and conditions of the scheme’.
