K7 Computing CTO Presented A Paper Oon Malware Prevention In AVAR 2008

K7 Computing’s Security Expert & CTO, Andrew Lee delivered speech focusing on “Exploiting Anti-Virtualization Techniques to Prevent Running of Malware”

(1888PressRelease) December 19, 2008 - Chennai, TN – K7 Computing, one of the leading information security software companies, is pleased to announce that its Chief Technology Officer & leading Antivirus expert, Andrew Lee has presented a paper discussing “Exploiting Anti-Virtualization Techniques to Prevent Running of Malware” in AVAR 2008, after analysing and testing it on different environments.

Andrew’s primary emphasis on the presentation was on the types of malware that detected when they run in a virtual environment and the possibility of using this fact against the malware, by simulating a debugger or virtual environment. He also pointed out that “The most used virtual systems are VMWare and VirtualPC, so it’s no surprise that most of the tricks used by malware are focused towards these products. Proving once again that in most cases the authors of malware are pretty lazy, we found that the tricks used in most malware are very similar and rely on well known techniques for VM detection”.

He also highlighted that “We, as an industry need to be brave enough to move towards technologies that offer greatest advantages to the customer in terms of protection, not just detection.”

Being an integral part of the Association of anti-Virus Asia Researchers (AVAR), Andrew Lee said that the AVAR conference really is a showcase of International and Asia/Pacific regional talent and is a good opportunity to highlight the cutting edge work that is being done by companies in the region. Security is a global issue and recent events in India have highlighted that. We were glad to support the conference, and felt it was very important to continue, even in the face of such troubled times, because for our customers and users in general, the threats are increasing, and we should not diminish our activities in presenting innovative solutions that can help users protect themselves.
