  • (1888PressRelease) April 01, 2009 - Amidst the push to reform middle grades education, Tween Publishing announces that it has launched its Student Organizational Skills ("SOS") podcast program. Tween’s SOS program addresses an increasing concern that many middle school students do not have the academic discipline -- that is the work habits, time management and organizational skills they need to be successful in school. In a recent report by ACT Inc., The Forgotten Middle, 8 in 10 middle school students were found to be lacking the academic discipline essential for for being on track for college.

Tween’s “edu-tainment” podcasts interact with its popular workbook The Middle School Student’s Guide to Ruling the World!  The podcast program consists of ten 25-30 minute lessons that can be used by teachers to supplement Tween’s in-class SOS instruction, or utilized by at-home and independent learners to acquire these essential skills.

Susan Mulcaire, CEO of Tween Publishing, and creator of the SOS program, is excited about the addition of the podcasts to Tween’s resources. “ACT’s study confirmed what we already knew: Good work habits, time management and organizational skills are essential for achievement in middle school and beyond. Getting the average 11-14 year old excited about learning these skills is tough, but they really respond to the SOS format that includes graphics, comics, typical middle school characters, and now, the podcasts. SOS is a very effective and timely middle school program.”

Tween's SOS program is the only comprehensive work habits, time management and organizational skills program designed specifically for the sixth through eighth grade.  Included are such skills as binder organization, using a planner, organizing a home work space, using a rubric, group project management, self-advocacy for middle school,  remembering daily responsibilities, detecting and correcting poor homework habits, long term project management and understanding grade averaging.

The SOS program is an effective and easy way to teach principles of academic discipline in middle school. The program is gaining in popularity throughout the US and in many countries overseas. “The response has been wonderful!” says Mulcaire. “Every educational dollar counts these days, and must be spent wisely. The SOS program has long-lasting benefits, and can improve achievement across all areas of the curriculum. Its universal application makes it an excellent choice for advisory, study skills class, after school programs, summer school, and even character education.”  The SOS podcasts can be accessed from Tween’s website at www.middleschoolguide.com. The podcasts are in MP3 format and can be downloaded to iPods and  Mp3s.
