Just How Long Is An Alpha?

On March 19th of this year, Adobe announced their first public Alpha of their much vaunted Flash Application Runtime Apollo. It seemed to me strange then that why on March 1st Elizabeth Montalbano of the IDG News Service, announced to the world, and it was taken up by many of the web journals and blog sites, that Adobe would be launching their Beta version of Apollo. Which is it?

(1888PressRelease) May 19, 2007 - It’s a question upon which the community are divided, some say its Alpha, some are saying that it’s been too long in the Alpha stage and should now a classed in the beta stage of development. Adobe themselves are saying that Apollo is still in it’s Alpha stage and to be fair to them, as they are creating Apollo, then they should know.

If Apollo is hiding behind its Alpha mask then surely the question is why?

What is Adobe waiting for? Pam Deziel, director, Platform Business Unit for Adobe said in the March 1st article, that the full version of Apollo would be issued in the 2nd half of 2007. Whilst Anthony Costa, founder and Managing partner of EffectiveUI, the Denver based company that has an early look at Apollo, said it would be in the 3rd quarter. It seems that those involved don’t altogether know and if Apollo is to be ready for the second half of the year or the third quarter then, they’ve got to get a move on.

Perhaps the answer to Adobe’s reluctance to launch fully into the market lies within the community websites and blogs themselves. MDM Zinc does seem to be dominant when it comes to the Flash to Desktop debate; extended command API, refined projectors and 100% Standalone. Apollo is not stand alone; it requires its own runtime that must be installed on the end user system to enable the desktop function to work. Although the gulf between MDM Zinc and Adobe Apollo is a mighty one, both have been quick to point out the differences within their software, one can’t help but feel that Apollo are slightly on the back foot. It will be interesting to see what MDM have up their sleeve to keep their Desktop Crown.

I am looking forward to the announcements that will be coming from Adobe in regards to Apollo; I just which they’d get on with it. Alpha, Beta it’s all Greek to me.
