January 27, 2007 - Maryland, USA - Armed Forces Connection (AFC), a free nationwide service for veterans and their families to ensure a smooth transition from military service to civilian employment, announces its launch. Services include career and educational counseling, access to a global job board designated for military personnel and their families, and informational resources for financing and locating a home.
With the upcoming military base realignment, more than 50,000 people are expected to relocate to Maryland. They will need jobs, homes and services as they move their families to the area.
Companies in the area are invited to support AFC in listing openings on its Web site to aid service members and their families in finding jobs, homes and security in Maryland. In addition, AFC provides recruiting services via the Internet for veterans and family members to include pre-separation counseling, resume critique and writing, behavioral interview preparation, and other no cost transition services. The service is available to all United States veterans (past and present), not only those serving in the Global War on Terror overseas.
“These brave men and women are out there defending us, doing essential jobs for our country, and they should be able to come back and continue their lives,” says Mary Kraft, president of Mary Kraft & Associates (MK&A), a Veteran Friendly Corporation, and the first firm in Maryland to list openings on the AFC Web site. Transition is difficult for many Veterans. Although they are well qualified, they need assistance with securing employment, furthering their education and finding new homes. Many have spouses actively seeking employment today.
“We all have an obligation to assist our service men and women upon their return home and in some cases their relocation to Maryland,” Kraft adds.
Kraft says she has dedicated her staff to assist the military because “it’s the right thing to do. We’ve entrusted them to fight for our freedom and keep us safe. It’s the least we can do for them.” She encourages other Maryland firms to join in the effort to give back to our service men and women and their families. The cost, she says, is much less than the fees instituted by other major career Web sites.
Despite the fact that employers are required to retain jobs for their employees who are called to duty, often times their jobs are not what they left. Overnight shifts, different positions and some resistance may illegally replace their previous employment situation. “Members of our military are hard working, dependable, loyal, and reliable and often possess characteristics desirable to all employers,” Kraft says.
