JC's tryst with the Doc who Rocks

Exclusive interview with Dr. Palash Sen, India’s Youth Icon.

(1888PressRelease) October 01, 2009 - What happens when an 11 year old kid bumps into a doc who rocks? Our very own JC (the super curious, gizmo kid from Iken) happened to meet Dr. Palash Sen, India’s first rockstar and got into lots of music, masti and some thought provoking discussions on education. Witness Dr. Palash re-live his childhood only on www.iken.in

Below is an excerpt from the interview with Dr. Palash Sen taken by JC on education in India and how it helped him make the right choices in life.

JC: What role has education played in shaping your personality?
Dr. Palash Sen: Whatever I am today is because of the education I received and also my genes. Education helped make the right choices in life. Education is not only about school, but also learning from your surroundings and different people. I was lucky because I was surrounded by very good people, and I learnt the right things because of them.

JC: We’ve heard that you were SRK’s senior in school and you were his first playback singer? Any memories?
Dr. Palash Sen: Shahrukh was a very good friend of mine though we are not in touch regularly. He was a year junior to me in school and we have done theater together. I remember there was a play called “The Wiz” based on The Wizard of Oz where Shahrukh played The Wizard and I played The Tinman. At that time, I used to sing all his songs, so technically I was his first playback singer. Couple of years ago, Shahrukh also mentioned this in a book written on him.

JC: Did your parents have to force you to study?
Dr. Palash Sen: No one likes to study all the time, apart from my wife (laughs). Schooling is not something that comes naturally to a person…

JC: What are your views about the current education scenario in India?
Dr. Palash Sen: It should definitely change. Education is not just about getting away with the boards. There is too much of cramming and less learning. This is where I feel that the education system has gone wrong in India and all over the world. And as Pink Floyd puts it, everyone is just “Another Brick in the Wall”.

JC: Would you encourage and support your kids if they want to pursue music or acting?
Dr. Palash Sen: I have always said that my son can do anything after he becomes a doctor (laughs). I want him to take good decisions in life, and once he gets good education, it doesn’t matter even if he becomes a “Halwai”. Education always helps u to weigh your options properly.

JC: Being a parent, do you feel that kids need to learn from experiences beyond what’s taught in school?
Dr. Palash Sen: Absolutely! There is a lot more to learning than knowing facts and figures. In the current scenario, a lot of studying goes down the drains.

JC: Education or Passion?
Dr. Palash Sen: Education followed by passion.
