March 04, 2009 - Jason Parsons has taught all over the world and has danced and choreographed for artists such as SWV, Diana King, and Celine Dion. Currently a faculty member with New York City Dance Alliance, Jason sat at his home in New York City recently to talk to JigTV.com about his career and what keeps him going.
After growing up in New York, but living in LA for three years, Jason came back to New York because of the availability of training. "The kind of dancer I love is the kind who can dabble in everything. That's how I was trained. They can wear a lot of different hats and that makes a great dancer. Training in L.A. doesn't really exist because everyone is hustling to get work." He stresses the necessity for dancers to keep training and to continue taking dance classes.
Jason Parsons choreographs for Mike Meisner's Evolution and feels that great choreography should tell a story. Jason is not afraid to bring religion, politics, or any other subject into his work. "Dancing makes me cry" he says, as well as "watching people that I love move." He is inspired most by a great show and strives to communicate on a high level in his own choreography.
He is constantly "filling the well" and feeding himself inspiration with great art, music and shows. His favorite music right now is by Sigur Ros and Radiohead. Jason is currently considering starting his own company, to create on a larger scale. He finds strength in groups of talented choreographers and loves the dancers he is currently surrounded by, and as such, feels now is the time to start his own company.
Parsons' advice to dancers is to "always be true to yourself. Work hard and find your groove and what works for you. Hopefully you do this because it empowers you. It's not about celebrity, but being able to change someone's life through movement. Inspire other people and give back what you're given".
JigTV.com is offering a series of interviews with master choreographers such as Jason Parsons, Brian Friedman, and Suzi Taylor, among other top choreographers and dancers. To view the interview with Jason Parson, visit JigTV.com.
