Jaguars' Telvin Smith's Inaugural Valdosta "Game Changer" Youth Day A Big Success For Local Youth

  • Valdosta, GA (1888PressRelease) June 22, 2016 - Nearly 300 kids, ages 6-16 joined Jacksonville Jaguars' star linebacker Telvin Smith for a free football and cheer camp in his hometown of Valdosta, Georgia. Lowndes High School's Head Coach Randy McPherson and his football staff, along with several top NFL players, and Smith's former Florida State teammates supported Telvin's efforts by volunteering as camp coaches.

    Telvin opened the day by welcoming campers to his inaugural event and highlighting the significance of the community that supported him. He also emphasized giving back and shared words of motivation as the group prepared to take the field at his alma mater, Lowndes High School.

    The coaches separated the campers by age group to work on different speed and agility drills, and the groups rotated through various stations. Cheerleaders from the Jacksonville Jaguars ROAR squad worked with the eager young cheer campers in the gym. They also took the time to talk about the importance of teamwork and confidence.

    After a fun filled day on the field, the group came together for a post camp barbeque. The cheer campers opened up the "Chalk Talk" portion of the camp by performing the cheer routine that they learned alongside the Jaguars' Roar Squad.

    Valdosta Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Payton Jr. took the stage to present Telvin with a proclamation in recognition of his accomplishments during his time at Lowndes High, achievement of making it to the NFL and for giving back to his community.

    During the "Chalk Talk", Telvin and his NFL peers handed out awards to standout campers who exhibited good sportsmanship. Each of the NFL pros shared their own motivational words of wisdom with the campers in the hopes that their stories will inspire the group to set lofty goals.

    "This was truly a great day and I'm grateful for the opportunity to give back," said Smith. "I just wanted to let the kids know that they're no different than me or any of the NFL guys; the key to achieving any goal is hard work, determination and perseverance."

    About Telvin Smith:
    While at Lowndes, Smith played football and ran track. As a junior he helped his team win the state AAAAA championship. He went on to attend Florida State University where he was named first-team All-ACC. The Jaguars drafted Smith in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he has begun to collect accolades early in his professional career, twice earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
