May 22, 2007 - To what am I referring? Well it’s Apollo of course. Which cunning fiend named Adobe’s latest offering Apollo? It’s an interesting choice of name. Especially when you consider that in the last week that Java FX has just been released. There’s a hot connection, a nice shiny golden one. Java FX is the baby of industry giants Sun Inc.
The Greeks and the Romans worshiped Apollo, the archer-god of medicine and healing, light, truth, archery and also a bringer of death-dealing plague. It was during the 3rd century BC that the Romans started to worship him as Apollo Helios, the God of the Sun.
Is Adobe having a sly swipe at the owners of Java and through it have they stated their intentions right in the heart of their campaign with their new products name? If it happens to be a coincidence then so be it, but I feel that when they start bringing those Gods of Olympus into the matter who ‘bring death-dealing plagues’ then it strikes me that someone, somewhere, means business.
MDM Zinc is meaning business when it comes to Apollo and Flash. The “Flash to Desktop” market leader doesn’t look like its going to lie down and play dead for the industry giant; and why should it. If Apollo is going to be a success then it needs to be seen by the community at large for what it is. Adobe should not sit back and let the ill informed portray Apollo as an answer to MDM Zinc, when it just isn’t.
It will be interesting to see if Adobe’s Apollo will, like it’s namesake, become overlord of the Sun, and whether it will bring a ‘death plague’ to others or maybe someone will open Pandora’s Box and let out some force, so powerful that it would be able to topple a god.
