Is This Ethical Or Even Fair?

Small fledgling independent medical bookshop finds itself under direct attack from the giants of the booksellers world, Amazon and Waterstone’s. Isn’t there enough to go round?

(1888PressRelease) June 27, 2007 - Small fledgling independent medical bookshop finds itself under direct attack from the giants of the booksellers world, Amazon and Waterstone’s. Isn’t there enough to go round?

Launched in March 2007, Xultbooks.com is a small independent online medical bookshop, catering purely for medical professionals, students and trainees. It would seem however that these online giants have spotted this new ‘threat’ on the horizon and have begun sharpening their swords to quickly cut this fledgling business down before it even leaves the nest.

Recently Amazon & Waterstone’s in particular have begun an Google Adword campaign, posting sponsored search results Ads for their company name, ‘xultbooks’, obviously with the aim of drawing what little business a small independent bookshop gets in this day of online goliath bookshops away. (click here to view the search in question)

In principle, isn’t this the same as a man from Tesco standing outside a small local corner shop handing out flyers to its customers or a big school bully stealing the dinner money off a small new boy?

Isn’t there room in today’s market place for anything independent? Do we only have room for the chains and goliath multinationals that crush all local competition? Will we let the large chains and multinationals dominate the internet as well as our high streets? Do we want to live in a world where you can only buy from Wal-Mart, Tesco & Amazon?
