Is Smoking Killing Your Loved Ones

Your smoking could be having a far worse effect on those around you than you think.

(1888PressRelease) January 16, 2007 - Though it is often spoken about in the media, sometimes it takes more than just a tv ad to let you know just how dangerous smoking is for everyone around you.

Sydney, Australia – Everyone knows that smoking will harm your health, the message is thrown at us from just about every angle possible these days. The statistics are shoved in our faces every minute of the day, the health care bill keeps on adding up and the people keep on dying. Yet though we are all aware of the dangers of smoking it often takes something far more personal to jolt us into quitting. Even threats to our own personal health rarely take effect, one always seems to think they can quit later. Yet it is not just the smokers who are put at risk from smoking, their loved ones can pay far too high a price for their addiction.

“I’d been a smoker since 15 and my dad had been smoking since as far back as I can remember” said John Samuels a 26 yr old from Sydney, Australia. “I’d talked about quitting before but in some ways it is such a part of the culture over it makes it difficult. My dad on the other hand had never even considered quiting, smoking was just a part of him. Until my mother started coughing up blood.”

An urgent trip to the doctor and the diagnosis was confirmed, she had a small mass in her left lung. If left untreated this could have developed into a far more serious and inoperable cancer which would have prematurely ended John’s mothers life. She was lucky that they caught it early but many people aren’t so lucky, as quite often lung cancer has no noticeable symptoms until it is far too late. Lung cancer is just one of the many possible illnesses caused by smoking and second hand smoke, others including heart disease, blindness or even gangrene.

To quit smoking is a very hard undertaking but one which cannot be avoided any longer. Modern therapies and traditional counselling can help overcome the cravings and soften the withdrawal symptoms, making it far easier to become cigarette free. Often a complete lifestyle change is needed in order to remove the temptations and triggers which usually prompted smoking previously.

Both John and his father were able to quit smoking with the help of some online resources and their own support network, and their whole family will now continue to enjoy a much healthier life.
