Indiana Author of "A Separate God: Journal of an Amish Gir" Signs Book at Family’s Dutch Mill Buffet

Former Amish woman signs novel based on real-life events.

(1888PressRelease) August 04, 2009 - Milroy, IN - Lucinda Streiker-Schmidt, who left the close-knit Amish community of rural Indiana to start a new life, will sign her novel, A Separate God: Journal of an Amish Girl, at the Dutch Mill Buffet on Saturday, August 22nd beginning at noon. The Dutch Mill Buffet is located at 8500 South State Road 3.

A Separate God is a fictional account of the author’s childhood and marriage, but is based on factual events. It follows Rachel, a young woman raised in an Old Order Amish family, who has dreams of living a life of joy and freedom. Rachel’s journey takes her from oppression to the liberty of self-discovery when she embraces her dreams and finds the courage to resist the Amish structure.

Ms. Streiker-Schmidt, who married and had two children while in the Amish faith, grew up with questions about the outside world, and after suffering an abusive marriage, divorced her Amish husband and began a new life with her children. After putting herself through nursing school and establishing her career, she began working on her novel, which is based on the journals she kept as a young girl.

John Schmidt, Lucinda’s brother and owner of the Dutch Mill Buffet, will be on hand to greet the community and support his sister in her endeavors. “I couldn’t be more proud of Lucinda and everything she has accomplished,” he stated. “The Amish community needs a voice and Lucinda is the perfect person to be it.”

Ms. Streiker-Schmidt condemns the unhealthy environment she found herself in but also has much love for the community of her youth. Her novel has received much attention and praise from those within the Amish community as well as those from the outside, including former members of the faith.

The book is available at any bookstore nationwide or can be ordered through the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore as well as by visiting www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.target.com. An audio version is also available from the publisher.

Ms. Streiker-Schmidt currently resides in Elkhart, Indiana where she maintains close relationships with her family, treasuring time spent with them and her friends, both secular and Amish. Her latest accomplishment is joining the ranks of MENSA into which she was recently inducted.
