India's 50 best companies to work for

(1888PressRelease) June 29, 2011 - Mumbai: The Indian corporate sector employs millions of people. But how many are lucky to find the best employers and the best workplaces?

A great workplace ensures that employees have freedom to execute their ideas and enjoy the work they do. Employees yearn for appreciation and a congenial environment to work.

But amid the tight schedules and high sales and revenue targets, how many companies actually keep employees happy and help them maintain a work-life balance?

Great Place to Work Institute have recently listed the best workplaces in India. More than 500 companies took part in the year's survey. Of these, 471 firms met the eligibility criteria.

A total of 67,000 employees across 20 sectors participated in giving a true picture of what they felt about the workplace.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
1. Google India Pvt. Ltd., Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd., Makemytrip India Pvt. Ltd., American Express India, Marriott Hotels India Pvt. Ltd are the top five companies among the top 50 companies of best work places in India.(List attached)
2. Overall expectation of employee remains the same as in 2010.
3. Companies are putting in place new initiatives to retain the talent - Such as Greyglers by Google, Makemytrip.com offers 70% esops to its workforce, American Express has special pregnancy care programme for female employees.
4. Employee perception is more challenging in the growth phase then in down turn.
5. 31 of the top 50 best work places are led by the leaders who are promoted from within.
6. Women representation in work places continues to below. 13 of the top 50 companies have less than 10% women employee.
7. The top 50 best workplaces are concentrated in Mumbai, NCR and Bangalore, but also have representation from Chennai, Pune, Vizag, Ahmedabad and Ludhiana.
8. 38 of the Top 50 have more than 1000 employees, with 19 out of 50 having more than 5000 employees. Only 12 of the Top 50 Best Workplaces saw employee increases of more than 30 per cent in the previous year, and 5 actually reduced its workforce.
9. While 8 out of Top 50 best workplaces have employee attrition of over 20 per cent, however, in all major industries, attrition for the Top 50, on an average, is less by one-third to two-third of the industry average.
10. Overall, one of the biggest improvements in workplace culture shown by the best workplaces over the years has been in the area of work- life balance, flexibility in being able to take time off when required, and creatively designing and implementing practices and policies which are perceived as special and unique benefits, by employees.
11. One of the most difficult areas where the best employers have fared much better than others is in fair pay and fair share of profits. Corporate India has loosened its purse strings in 2011 and in the Top 50 best workplaces this year, 4 per cent more respondents in our survey are agreeing with the statement that they receive a fair share of profits made by their company and 3 percent more agreeing that they are paid fairly for the work they do. Fair pay and fair share of profits had seen the biggest dip in our previous Study at the beginning of 2010
