  • (1888PressRelease) December 08, 2012 - Shaastra is the annual technical festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. With footfalls of over 20,000 witnessed every year, it is well-known for being one of the biggest and best technical fests in Asia.

    Innovative and enthusiastic students from over 200 colleges all over the country are gearing up for the four-day event, to be held in the famous wooded campus of IIT Madras. With a plethora of events, workshops and exhibitions centered around the theme of 'Igniting Imagination', Shaastra promises to provide a platform for creativity and innovation, and showcase the 'Spirit of Engineering.' Exceeding expectations every time, Shaastra has consistently become bigger and better each year, and is the world's first student-managed festival to be certified ISO 9001.

    The 14th edition of the fest will be held from January 5th to 8th 2013. This is a departure from the time of year that Shaastra traditionally used to happen in.

    Major Competitive Events
    Over the years, certain events at Shaastra have built up a reputation for their intense level of competition and the high standards they expect. Events like Robotics, Aerobotics, Contraptions and Junkyard Wars attract the best minds and pit them against each other in a grueling test of wits and strength. Year after year, these events put up an unforgettable display of talented entries. Shaastra 2013 has introduced new twists in the problem statements of these events, and is expected to be better than ever before.

    Research Expo and Exhibitions
    Exhibitions, of the likes of the Research Expo will showcase real innovations in various fields of engineering. Research Expo 2013 is all set to showcase the new dimension of research happening across all the departments at IIT Madras. There will be a poster presentation by research scholars highlighting their work. The Shaastra Research Expo is everyone's chance to enjoy the experiment displays and live demonstrations such as free space optical link, laser graffiti and lot more.

    This year, Shaastra will also play host to a variety of international exhibitions, as well as the Industrial Open House. With exhibitions of such caliber on display, the exhibitions this year are a tried and tested crowd-puller.

    As if the excitement isn't enough yet, the spectacular air show is yet another candidate to make anyone miss a beat. The air show attracts a large crowd every year to witness professionals perform breathtaking maneuvers.

    Ideas Challenge
    The IITM Ideas Challenge, a fresh initiative this Shaastra, is all set to tap into young minds across the country for radical solutions to existing social problems. With a very open ended problem statement, the event asks participants to propose flexible solutions to relevant contemporary issues such as governance and waste management. Ideas Challenge calls upon student groups to select socially relevant problems for which they believe they have answers. The event will serve as a bridge between answers in the avatars of processes or products, and their implementation. This event is open to students of all streams of education, for the greatest onus upon the next generation is in addressing these problems through their respective areas of expertise.

    Envisage and Shaastra Nights
    Shaastra Envisage, the first ever fully student organized tech show is staged to bedazzle one and all with its razzle-dazzle set to light the nights at Shaastra. Featuring never seen before displays of the likes of LED Cube-displays, Envisage is a spectacle to look forward to. These shows are coupled with the awe-inspiring displays to be put up at the Shaastra Nights, where groups like Freelusion are set to perform. Shaastra Nights displays the prowess of technological innovation that is guaranteed to enthrall and hold spectators spellbound. Shaastra puts together a stunning display of never-seen before technology, a perfect blend of technology and art sure to befuddle your mind! Shaastra Nights provides viewers with a new perspective of technology and its application set to provoke thought.

    Shaastra Junior: In keeping with its theme of igniting imagination, a new initiative has been taken this year - Shaastra Junior, under which Shaastra visits schools, conducts competitions, showcases innovations and seeks to kindle the fire at a grassroots level. Under Shaastra Junior, Shaastra 2013 has already touched well over 200 hundred schools and helped countless students find the spark of science within them. Shaastra Junior is the younger audience's chance to witness and participate in the events designed to bring out the inner engineer in them and add to their store of knowledge by attending lectures and workshops.

    Research Magazine This edition of Shaastra shall also be marked special by the release of IIT-Madras's very own research magazine. An initiative aimed at getting across IIT-Madras's research work to the rest of the world more visibly.

    With prizes worth over Rs. 13 lakhs and never-seen-before events and exhibitions, Shaastra 2013 promises to surpass all its previous editions. Whether their interests lie in building robots, quizzing, optimising computer programs or learning how to fly an aeroplane, there will be something at Shaastra for every participant and spectator.
