May 13, 2009 - i-to-i, the UK’s leading TEFL and meaningful travel provider, has been selected as one of the National Geographic Traveler magazine's 2009 Tours of a Lifetime.
The tour, The Southern Africa overland experience, will be featured in the May/June 2009 issue in addition to being listed on the National Geographic Traveler magazine website http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com/2009/05/tours-of-a-lifetime/intro-text
Gordon Mathie, managing director, i-to-i comments, “I am delighted that one of our meaningful travel tours has been included in the National Geographic top 50 tours of a lifetime.
At i-to-i we are committed to providing fulfilling and life-changing travel experiences to anyone with a desire to get out there and make a difference for the better. All of the projects overseas are based in the local community and are local initiatives. When you travel with i-to-i, you will stay in locally run accommodation and travel on locally owned transport. In this way i-to-i can ensure that the revenue generated from this part of the project cost goes directly into the local economy.”
According to the National Geographic Traveler magazine overview, “The tours on this year's list are organized into three categories-active, classic, and cultural-and include 47 tour listings, plus in-depth features on an alternative route to Peru's
iconic Machu Picchu, a tour of Old Bavaria, a self-guided ramble through Newfoundland. You won't find any $50,000 round-the-world by private jet tours on this year's list. On the other hand, many of our tours don't necessarily qualify as ‘cheap’. But every tour, whatever its price tag, offers small-group, thoughtfully crafted experiences that are eco- and culturally sensitive, provide uncommon access, and foster interaction with the locals.”
Norie Quintos, senior editor from National Geographic Traveler magazine explains, "Every year, the editorial team combs the world to find the most authentic, most innovative, most immersive, best-guided, and most sustainable tours. This year, we wanted to make sure that the trips we picked were also a great value, given the economic climate. What we found is that there is no better time to go on a guided tour than now as the traditional savings offered by an outfitter being able to negotiate better rates on a trip's components is magnified by cheaper airfares, a strengthened dollar, and more discounts, freebies, and extras."
