With her complex representations of the human form, Tina Day Harber presents us with insightful portraits of humanity. Harber brings to her creations her expertise as a psychiatric social worker, a former occupation that allows her to rapidly grasp the fundamental nature of the man or woman before her. Yet, she does not actively analyze her subject, intentionally working with quick brushstrokes to capture, in oil paint on canvas, the essence of the individual before her. This technique injects the composition with a texture arising from the layering of paint and an abstraction resulting from the artist’s swift rendering of life on a two-dimensional surface. The human figure is often distorted, with angular elements such as a jutting elbow or collar bone mingling with the soft curves of a hip, torso, or breast. Facial expressions feature prominently, allowing a glimpse into the psyche of the subject. Harber’s works thus offers us a sense of intimacy, granting deeper knowledge of the person represented before us.
Tina Day Harber has a Master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago, and for the last twelve years has studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while exhibiting her work both nationally and abroad. She lives and works in Chicago, Illinois.
