April 23, 2008 - According to its Texas inventor and owner of Cannon Fuel Systems, G.D.Cannon, even though it involves revamping the fuel system as well as adding electronics to interact with the car’s onboard computer, the system is relatively simple and will be fairly inexpensive, especially given the current price of fuel.
Extensive testing done on his own car, a 1996 Toyota Camry, has consistently produced mileage numbers that rival the best selling hybrids of Honda and Toyota but for thousands of dollars less. While Cannon’s 2.2 liter Camry gets around 45 mpg on the highway, it’s only rated at 25 mpg.
Cannon says they hope to have a diesel model tested soon for trucks. “We have every expectation that we can increase diesel truck mileage too, I’m not going to venture a guess at the per cent increase, but I expect it to be worth the effort.”
The cost should be around $600 installed, to retrofit an existing car (once systems are available). If they were built into a new car at the factory, it could be done for considerably less.
