A genre-bending Chicago group Megitza Quartet accompanied by a cymbalom/violin player Krzysztof Zubek and a Gypsy brass band Black Bear Combo will deliver a night of the kind of music people can’t help but get up to dance to. The show kicks off their Midwest spring tour celebrating the release of their debut full length record “Boleritza.”
The album is named “the most impressive to come out of Chicago (…) with devotion to passionate rhythm and heart-rendering vocals” (NewCityMusic). “Boleritza” features a profound violin virtuoso Roby Lakatos among other guests.
"World music for the new millennium. Kurt Weil meets Edith Piaf, meets Stephane Grappelli, meets Erik Satie, meets the Megitza Quartet…"
-Grammy Award winning Composer and Producer Jim Tullio
Megitza Quartet was formed by a vocalist / bassist Malgorzata Babiarz. Influences of the Polish Highlander tradition of the village, from which she originally hails, can be heard in her compositions as well as in her style of singing. Andreas Kapsalis, an acoustic guitar prodigy, adds elements of flamenco, while the accordionist Marek Lichota evokes the pathos of klezmer with fluidly melodic runs, all backed by an innovative drummer Jamie Gallagher.
“[Megitza Quartet is](…) like the Gipsy Kings for a more sophisticated audience” -Lucid Culture Review, New York
